Red Wings coach Todd McLellan is moving Albert Johansson up to the second defensive pairing with Justin Faulk while Ben Chiarot drops to the third pairing. Chiarot previously occupied the second pairing spot last season after Faulk's arrival in a deadline-day trade from St. Louis. The coaching staff wants Johansson to start fast and handle top-four minutes while evaluating how the pairings complement each other.
