Jimmy Howard will start for the Detroit Red Wings against the Columbus Blue Jackets due to Petr Mrazek's illness. The Blue Jackets will have new players including Oliver Bjorkstrand in his NHL debut, while Dalton Prout is suspended and Fedor Tyutin is sick. Justin Falk and John Ramage were recalled from the American Hockey League on an emergency basis.
