The Detroit Red Wings signed goaltender Dominik Hasek from the Buffalo Sabres on July 1, 2001, then acquired left winger Luc Robitaille four days later, followed by right winger Brett Hull on August 22, 2001. Hull had scored 37 goals and 76 points in the 2000-01 season with the Dallas Stars before joining the Red Wings. The team already featured Steve Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov, Brendan Shanahan, Nicklas Lidstrom, and Chris Chelios on its roster.
