Adam Oates, who accumulated over 1,079 assists and was considered one of the greatest playmakers in NHL history, was traded by the Red Wings on June 15, 1989, to the Blues for Bernie Federko and Tony McKegney. Oates had been signed as a free agent by Detroit after his college career at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The trade occurred during the 1988-89 season when Oates recorded 16 goals and 62 assists in 69 games, prior to being moved despite his strong performance.
