Terry Sawchuk was the first Detroit Red Wings goalie to wear a mask in an NHL regular-season game, doing so on October 11, 1962. Claude LaForge wore a goalie mask during a December 28, 1961, game for the Red Wings after fracturing his cheekbone while playing for the AHL Hershey Bears earlier that month. At the time, only two NHL goalies wore masks: Jacques Plante and Don Simmons.
