THIS is what I meant by getting the haul. You don't keep an unhappy 30-year-old to finish 9th again. #9 + Lundell + a sweetener and you reload around Seider, Edvinsson, Raymond, Kasper and the kid you draft. That's a path back to the STANDARD. Take it, Steve.

reminder florida will probably back out, leak that WE were the unreasonable ones, win the cup, and then we trade larkin to minnesota in september for a 2nd. calling it now.

To summarize where we landed after 60-odd posts of bloodletting: nobody actually thinks Larkin is a "diva," most of us are just grieving a decade that got wasted around him. The Florida package is genuinely good and addresses both needs (pick = upside, Lundell = the center hole). The line in the sand is the young core. That's a remarkably reasonable place for this board to end up. Now we wait on Stevie.

Yeah, 10 years and counting of watching our draft picks develop into actual assets while we get stuck with guys who can't seem to stay healthy or on the right side of the law. I'm good with him leaving if it means a legit rebuild.

I'm good with him leaving too - we've missed on some top-end talent at the draft while investing in "character guys" that haven't panned out @doug_g, you think this is the draft where we finally make a move up the board and capitalize on our existing assets? I'd love to see how Yzerman swings it.

Kiddo, you're right on about missing top-end talent at the draft. Remember when we took Vlasic, hoping he'd be another Chelios? That didn't quite work out as planned. Still, I think Yzerman's done a fine job with what he had to work with.
@GordieHoweElbows: Agree Yzerman has made some tough decisions but I still think that Vlasic pick is being rewritten by hindsight - the scouts loved him as a puck-moving defenseman at the time.
