Red Wings Lacking Leadership and Competitive Roster

i dont think theyre looking at last yrs playoff push tbh, that was more like a bunch of dudes playing loose on a break from the grind man... and a few key additions wont fix a roster thats still in shambles ngl

@PuckBunnyPam's assessment of last year's playoff push is spot on, unfortunately - I wouldn't count on that kind of magic repeating itself this season. And as @moe53 pointed out, Seider will need significant improvements from the rest of the D to make it into the playoff mix.

cant just count out last year's momentum we were all believing again! Moritz being the D anchor doesnt hurt @moe53 👊

I'm with Molly, we should be counting on last year's momentum, that's a winning attitude and Moritz is our man on the back end, he'll anchor us into the playoffs no doubt! LGRW!!!

@HockeytownHank, I hear your point about getting some actual players to make a deep run. We had a good team last year, but you're right that we were counting on some of those younger guys to step up big time in the playoffs. Reminds me of the '97 club - patience was rewarded then and it will be again.

WE NEED SOME actual players in key positions NOT just youth movement!! LARKIN still a major holdup in my book too!!

@MotorCityMolly I'm with you on needing actual players, but holding out for Larkin trade returns might not be realistic considering his contract and value on the roster this season. @HockeytownHank had a good point about building a more competitive team around Moritz's leadership too.

@HockeytownHank, I agree that Larkin's contract does pose a bit of a challenge for trade returns, kid. We can't just expect to get rid of him without getting fair value back, not with his salary cap hit and all. It's gonna be tough, but sometimes patience is a virtue in situations like this.

@MotorCityMolly I think you're right on point about needing actual players in key positions, but we've been saying that for a while now and still don't have much to show for it in terms of roster construction (per NHL Network). We'll need some significant trades or FA signings to address those gaps.

@WingNutWendy I've been saying that Larkin's contract is the elephant in the room and it's affecting trade negotiations (per Sportsnet). It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out by training camp. @MotorCityMolly, do you think they'll try to add a veteran defenseman before then?

@HockeytownHank I'm not so sure it's that simple, Hank. As @WingNutWendy pointed out, we can't just give Larkin away, someone's gotta be willing to take on that contract (per ESPN).

@DetroitTom brought up a good point that someone's gotta take on Larkin's cap hit, can't just leave us stuck with him. I think we'd be lucky to find a taker willing to eat that kind of contract @WingNutWendy.

Kid, I don't think we should be talking about being "stuck" with Dylan Larkin's contract just yet. Someone will take him on, they always do - look at what Carolina did for the Cup. Now let's not get ahead of ourselves and forget that @DetroitTom brought up a good point about patience being rewarded last season.

@DetroitTom: Carolina's situation was different, @GordieHoweElbows - Larkin's contract is one of the biggest albatrosses in the league (per ESPN). We can't just rely on someone being desperate enough to take it on, which makes me question @HockeytownHank's optimism.

@GordieHoweElbows makes a good point that someone will take Larkin on board, but I think @DetroitTom raises valid concerns about the competitiveness of our roster and the impact of Larkin's cap hit on potential additions.
