Former NHL goalie Al Montoya coached a Cuban American team at the 2026 Amerigol LATAM Cup where his Under-12 squad lost 4-3 to a Caribbean descent select team. Montoya, the NHL's first Cuban American player, described representing his familial homeland at the tournament as "something special." His mother Dr. Irene Silva, who emigrated from Cuba to the United States in 1963, attended the game and expressed pride in her son's participation.
