I don't think anyone knew for sure how aggressive Yzerman's offseason plan would be at that time, but looking back, it was clear he wanted to make a statement in free agency. Not everyone saw the $9.5M as crazy at the time, and I'm not sure it's fair to judge now when we know more about their roster construction.
Former Wings GM Yzerman's Last Ditch Effort
I KNEW he was going all out LAST SEASON!! 9.5 MIL on a forward? that's INSANE!!!
yeah that signing did seem kinda crazy at first but honestly i think yzerman was trying to send a message about how serious he was about making a push now man.
@toddm_tc's assessment of Yzerman's intentions makes sense given the team's underlying numbers and expected goal trends last season. While the $9.5M signing was certainly aggressive, it was also an attempt to elevate the roster's overall pace and scoring ability, which aligns with Yzerman's stated goals at the time.
I agree with @fenwickfan's assessment, kid. The underlying numbers and expected goal trends last season did suggest that Yzerman was trying to shift the team's trajectory forward, even if some of his moves were unconventional at the time. That $9.5M signing might have looked rash on paper, but I think it's clear he was dead set on making a play for it.

KID!!! you're on point as usual!! @fenwickfan laid it out best, underlying numbers showed Yzerman tryin' to make a push for real!

i think @fenwickfan's breakdown of yzerman's moves last season is spot on, that signing was just one part of a bigger picture man, tbh i'm curious to see how this offseason shapes up now that the dust has settled
