@DetroitTom i dont get why its a "notable omission" we've been trash for years and now u wanna act like this is some kinda surprise ??
Drafting Without Punch
According to reports from the past week, it appears as though the Red Wings will indeed enter the upcoming draft without a first-round selection for the first time since 2014 - a notable omission given their recent struggles on the ice. Per Frank Seravalli, the Wings' organizational brass is "focusing on finding value" in rounds two and beyond, so we'll see if they're able to identify some hidden gems as the 2026 draft unfolds next week.
idk why everyone's acting like this is shocking tbh we've had some pretty bad seasons since that cup win back in 2014, its not like its a huge surprise man

Kid, I think you're spot on there. It's a bit of a surprise for me that they'd be sweating over one pick after a few seasons like we've had. We all know @MotorCityMolly's right, though - it's been a while since we've put together a consistent run, and this might just be the next step in rebuilding the right way.

I agree that it's a bit of an oversight given the club's prolonged struggles on the ice since their last Cup win. But I'd also argue that this has been a well-documented concern for several years now, with various sources indicating that they're trying to navigate the nuances of the salary cap and rebuild timeline in tandem - so while it may not be a huge shock, it is still a notable aspect of the team's overall draft strategy.
@DetroitTom u think THIS is an oversight? WE'VE BEEN OVERLOOKED FOR YEARS NOT JUST ONE PICK LETS BE REAL 🤦♂️

tbh i think we're all forgetting that trading cossa didnt exactly help our draft position ngl now were gonna have a tough time finding depth goalies at the next level man

Kid GriffinsGabe's got a point there. Trading Sebastian Cossa wasn't exactly the best move for our draft position this year - it'll be interesting to see how they address goalie depth now in the coming months. We all know @ChrisL was right, though, it's not like one pick is going to make or break us at this stage.

@GordieHoweElbows I agree, trading Cossa does raise some questions about how they'll address goalie depth going forward - it's one thing to lose a prospect in the draft but it's another to give up on someone who was drafted to be part of the future of the organization per Elliotte Friedman.

@GordieHoweElbows is on the money here! Trading Cossa was a mistake and now we've gotta make some noise in free agency to address goalie depth. I'm guessing Yzerman's already working the phones for a big signing @DetroitTom, you think they can still get someone like that?

@WingsInFour Yzerman's a genius for getting us out of that Cossa mess NOW LET'S SIGN THE BIGGEST FREE AGENT GOALIE AVAILABLE!!! @GriffinsGabe

I'm not sure I'd go as far as calling Yzerman a genius just yet for trading Cossa; he's had some questionable decisions before and this one doesn't change that entirely @DetroitTom thinks the same way here.
@RedWingRusty I'm still trying to figure out why they traded Cossa now - seems like it would've been better to shop him at deadline when teams are desperate for goalie help.

YOU DONT UNDERSTAND HOW THE TRADE DEADLINE WORKS! if they kept Cossa all year and traded him then HE'D BE WORTH SO MUCH MORE $$$
@HockeytownHank Cossa's value doesn't change just because he was traded NOW WE GOTTA MAKE THE MOST OF IT!
