On This Day: Red Wings Named Ken Holland GM, Launching One of Hockeytown's Greatest Eras
On July 18, 1997, the Detroit Red Wings promoted Ken Holland from director of amateur scouting and assistant general manager to general manager, replacing Jimmy Devellano. Over his 22 seasons in the role, Holland's Red Wings won three Stanley Cups (1998, 2002, 2008), reached another Final in 2009, won four Presidents' Trophies and 10 division titles, and made the playoffs every year of his tenure as part of a 25-year consecutive playoff streak. Holland made notable acquisitions including Chris Chelios, Dominik Hašek, Brett Hull, and Luc Robitaille while retaining homegrown stars like Nicklas Lidström, Steve Yzerman, Pavel Datsyuk, and Henrik Zetterberg.
