Steve Yzerman out as GM: 'We are not where we expect to be'

Steve Yzerman is stepping down as Red Wings general manager, with the team beginning a search for a new head of hockey operations that will consider both internal and external candidates. Yzerman will transition to a senior adviser role to team governor Chris Ilitch while continuing to handle day-to-day hockey operations during the transition. The team stated "We are not where we expect to be" in reference to the change.
