Blackhawks add veterans Byram, Cole on defense

The Chicago Blackhawks acquired defenseman Bowen Byram from the Buffalo Sabres in a trade on June 23 and signed him to a six-year contract beginning in 2027-28, while also signing 37-year-old defenseman Ian Cole to a one-year contract on July 1 to strengthen their defense group. The team also added forwards Cole Smith and Jordan Greenway (who came with Byram in the trade) to their bottom-six forward group during the offseason.
