The Red Wings missed the playoffs after struggling down the stretch and being passed by the Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators for the final two Eastern Conference wild-card spots. General manager Steve Yzerman signed forward Viktor Arvidsson to a two-year contract with a $5 million average annual value during free agency. The Athletic's Harman Dayal listed the Arvidsson contract as one of the nine best contracts signed so far in free agency.
