Offer sheets for restricted free agents have become more common in 2024, with recent examples including New Jersey's deal with Barrett Hayton and Philadelphia's five-year, $90 million offer to Anaheim's Leo Carlsson. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has speculated that the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes might pursue an offer sheet with Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson, though any such attempt would likely be futile since the Red Wings have over $18 million in cap space and would certainly match any offer. The compensation for an offer sheet with an average annual value between $9.55 million and $11.94 million would be two first-round picks, one second-round pick, and one third-round pick.
