I think you're being too generous with calling this a "bigger plan". Sometimes teams just need some breathing room and San Jose's cap situation is pretty dire after locking up Dahlen. Maybe they can use the freed-up space to re-sign some of their own young players, that would be a more realistic expectation than some grand scheme.
