Leafs bench moves: Ex-Red Wings coach out, former player in
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that former Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde will not return as an assistant coach after one season, with Daniel Alfredsson—a former player who finished his career with Detroit in 2013-14—hired as an associate coach instead. Lalonde was fired by the Red Wings on December 26, 2024, after compiling a 89-86-23 record over two-plus seasons, and spent the 2024-25 season as an assistant in Toronto under Craig Berube before Berube was fired in May. Alfredsson, who most recently spent three seasons as an assistant coach with Ottawa, joins the Leafs coaching staff alongside John Gruden and Brad Werenka under new head coach Jim Hiller.
