Sebastian Cossa, a 6-foot-7 first-round draft pick, was traded by the Detroit Red Wings to Utah during the 2024 NHL draft, with the Wings using the acquired pick to select scoring prospect JP Hurlburt. The trade occurred due to significant depth in the Griffins' goalie pipeline, which includes Michal Postava, who started every playoff game for Grand Rapids this season, and Trey Augustine, a former Michigan State standout who turned pro last year. Cossa would have required waivers if he remained in the organization and was unlikely to play in the NHL next season despite two AHL All-Star appearances.
