Understanding the Cossa trade and Griffins' goalie room
Sebastian Cossa, a 6-foot-7-inch first-round draft pick, was traded by the Detroit Red Wings to Utah during the NHL draft after four seasons with their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. The Wings used the acquired pick to draft scoring prospect JP Hurlburt, with the trade occurring due to significant depth in the organization's goaltender pipeline, including Michal Postava and Trey Augustine. Despite Cossa's AHL All-Star appearances, consistency questions and performance struggles in the weeks leading up to the playoffs factored into Detroit's decision to move on.
