John Carlson signed a two-year, $17 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday with an average annual value of $8.5 million. The 36-year-old defenseman played for the Washington Capitals and Anaheim Ducks last season, recording 60 points in 71 regular-season games and six assists in 12 playoff games. Carlson's rights were acquired by the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, but the two sides were unable to reach a contract agreement before he became an unrestricted free agent.
