Playing with Matthews, Maple Leafs ‘luxury’ for McKenna, Button says
Craig Button, TSN director of scouting, stated on the "NHL Draft Class" podcast that Gavin McKenna, chosen first overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2026 NHL Draft, benefits from having several experienced resources in the organization including Mats Sundin, Wendel Clark, and Auston Matthews—all former first overall picks. Button said McKenna has the opportunity to have people around him to help him navigate what the NHL looks like in Toronto, which he characterized as a "luxury" not all first overall picks receive. Button also discussed other top draft picks including defenseman Daxon Rudolph selected fourth by Buffalo, and prospects eligible for the 2027 draft.
