Red Wings have glaring needs in free agency, but market is thin
Detroit has identified needs for a top-six forward, increased grit and scoring on the third and fourth lines, and an experienced backup goaltender heading into free agency Wednesday at noon, though general manager Steve Yzerman noted the market is thin. The Red Wings ranked 30th in five-on-five goals with 142 and 22nd overall in goals with 239, and their situation is complicated by uncertainty surrounding captain Dylan Larkin, who has requested a trade. Patrick Kane, an unrestricted free agent who has signed one-year deals with Detroit before free agency in each of the past two years, remained unsigned as of late Tuesday.
