NHL offseason could stay busy before free agency begins July 1
Several top NHL players are potentially available before free agency begins July 1, including Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski, who has indicated an unwillingness to re-sign with the team when his contract expires after the 2027-28 season. General manager Don Waddell has begun fielding calls on Werenski following the 2026 Upper Deck NHL Draft, though the Blue Jackets are under no immediate pressure to trade him as he has two seasons remaining on his contract. Waddell stated he plans to meet with Werenski to discuss the defenseman's future with the organization.
