The Carolina Hurricanes acquired the rights to defenseman John Carlson from the Anaheim Ducks, receiving a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and defenseman prospect Kyle Masters in return. Carlson, 36, is in the final year of an eight-year contract with an $8 million average annual value and will have exclusive negotiation rights with Carolina until he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1. The Hurricanes' associate general manager Darren Yorke stated the move was part of the team's effort to improve after winning the Stanley Cup this season.
