Detroit acquired the No. 23 overall pick from Utah in exchange for goalie Sebastian Cossa and selected forward J.P. Hurlbert, an 18-year-old who led the Kamloops Blazers in goals (42), assists (55) and points (97) in 68 regular-season games during 2025-26. Hurlbert won the WHL Rookie of the Year award and was selected to the WHL Conference First All-Star Team.
