The Detroit Red Wings acquired Bernie Federko and Tony McKegney from the St. Louis Blues on June 15, 1989, in exchange for Adam Oates and Paul MacLean. Federko had already established himself as one of the greatest players in Blues history, with 352 goals and 721 assists for 1,073 points in 927 games. The trade reunited Federko with head coach Jacques Demers but proved to be a costly acquisition for the Red Wings.
