Penn State left wing Gavin McKenna was selected first overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2026 NHL Draft, with the announcement made by Justin Bieber at KeyBank Center in Buffalo. McKenna, the top-ranked North American skater according to Central Scouting, had been connected to the Maple Leafs after Toronto won the draft lottery in May, improving from the No. 5 pick to No. 1. The 18-year-old from Whitehorse, Yukon received a visit from Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka in his hometown and had communicated with Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews following the NHL scouting combine.
