Unmasked: New EBUG rules helping regular goalies with load management
The NHL requires all teams to carry an emergency backup goalie (EBUG) on their roster this season under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Some teams are using EBUGs to help manage regular goalies' workloads during practice, according to Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger. EBUGs must meet specific eligibility criteria including not having played in an NHL game under a standard contract, playing more than 80 professional games, or playing professional hockey in the previous three seasons.
