Last Time Red Wings Didn't Have a First-Round Pick it Proved Very Rewarding For Yzerman
The Detroit Red Wings traded their 15th overall first-round pick to the St. Louis Blues at the trade deadline to acquire defenseman Justin Faulk, leaving them without a first-round selection for Friday's draft. The last time Detroit did not have a first-round pick was in 2012, when Steve Yzerman, then the Tampa Bay Lightning's GM, used the pick acquired from Detroit to select goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy 19th overall. Vasilevskiy has since won two Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe Trophy, and two Vezina Trophies with Tampa Bay.
