Matt Schaefer, a 19-year-old defenseman drafted first overall by the New York Islanders in 2025, has been living with former Islanders forward Matt Martin and his wife Sydney. The Martins were preparing for a long drive home from a family trip when they discovered Schaefer waiting to help unload their car. Schaefer was described as a "salt-of-the-earth young man" who had been living with the Martins for about six months.
